1970s Massachusetts: an overconfident art thief takes a few paintings from a museum during opening hours and gets away with it. Directed by (Bard College instructor!) Kelly Reichardt, The Mastermind follows this heist’s aftermath as amateur swindler James Blaine Mooney (Josh O’Connor) and his wife Terri (Alana Haim) must deal with the consequences of his hubris. Like her “Western” Meek’s Cutoff and her “thriller” Night Moves, Reichardt’s The Mastermind uses the heist genre as a jumping point for something funnier, weirder, and more politically potent than what one would expect.
