Born in Japan to Belgian parents, baby Amélie does little more than eat until an almost magical encounter with Belgian white chocolate awakens her to world and all of its mysteries and treasures. Though this film only follows its character until she’s three years old, little Amélie’s story manages to encompass life and death, postwar Japan and Europe, and the troubles of growing up in an ever-changing world. This beautifully animated film is based on Amélie Nothomb’s acclaimed autobiographical novel, The Character of Rain.
