In the late 16th century England, tutor Will (Paul Mescal) falls in love with young Agnes (Jessie Buckley) and begins to fancy himself a writer, though his parents do not approve of either ambition. Despite their difficulties, the couple do marry and have children, including little Hamnet. When their family experiences a sudden death, they must begin the hard journey of moving forward with their lives, whether that means dealing with nosy family members, or writing one of humanity’s greatest works of art. Adapted from the bestselling novel from Maggie O’Farrell, this film from director Chloé Zhao (The Rider, Nomadland) won two Golden Globes in the drama category: Best Picture and Best Actress.
“[An] immersive account of the desire, grief, love and anger that course between a woman and her playwright husband, culminating in a remarkable demonstration of what art can do.” — Nicholas Rapold, Sight & Sound
