Jeon-im, a college lecturer runs into trouble when she learns her student can no longer perform for the college drama festival, so she asks her uncle Si-eon, a legendary actor, for help. However, things continue to go awry when this uncle gets romantically involved with Jeon-im’s boss. Like Korean director Hong Sang-soo’s (On the Beach at Night Alone, A Traveler’s Needs) thirty-one other films, By the Stream’s characters eat ramyun, drink soju, flirt when they probably shouldn’t, and make art about eating and drinking and being unsuccessful in love. Starring Kim Min-hee, whose performance here won the Leopard for Best Performance at the Locarno Film Festival.
